4 Things to Keep in Mind When Developing a New Product

You have a product idea. You are building fast, iterating, shipping. Privacy compliance is probably not the first thing on your mind.

But here is the thing: the earlier you build privacy into your product, the less it will cost you later. Both in time and in legal risk.

When creating a new product, there are four things you should always keep in mind.

1. Data minimisation

Only collect the data that is necessary to provide your product's intended service. Do not over-collect or store data you do not actually need.

This sounds simple, but many products gather far more data than they use, often out of habit or "just in case" thinking. The rule is straightforward: if you do not need it, do not collect it.

2. User control

Give users control over their own data. Allow them to delete or edit their information, and provide clear information about what data you collect and how it is used.

Users who feel in control are users who trust your product. And trust drives adoption.

3. Security

Protect user data by implementing strong security measures, such as encryption and access controls, to prevent unauthorised access.

Security is not a feature you bolt on at the end. It is something you design for from the start. A breach can have serious consequences, not just financially, but for your reputation too. Read more about how to protect your business against a data breach.

4. Transparency

Be transparent about your privacy practices. Provide clear, concise, and easy-to-understand information that explains how user data is collected, used, and shared.

A privacy policy buried in legal language does not count as transparency. Your users should be able to understand, in plain terms, what happens with their data.

Building trust through privacy protection is not just a legal obligation. It is a genuine competitive advantage. Users who trust your product are more likely to adopt it, recommend it, and stick with it.
